Frequently asked questions

What is Rhythm Trainer?

Rhythm Trainer is a free browser tool for practising rhythm. Listen to a short pattern, tap it back and see how your taps line up with the notes.

How do I play?

Press Play and listen while the countdown runs. When the tap area turns green, tap it, click it or press Space once for each note. Do not tap during rests or add taps during long notes. Stop or Escape ends playback.

What rhythms can I practise?

There are 24 levels in six groups: quarter and half notes, quarter rests, eighth-note pairs, mixed rhythms, sixteenth notes and mixed subdivisions. Sixteenths have two beams and divide a beat into four equal taps. You can change the tempo in Settings.

What do the coloured dots mean?

Green means on time; yellow means early or late. A cross marks an extra tap, and an empty circle marks a missed note. Timing is measured with a 120-millisecond on-time allowance.

What if my first tap is slightly late?

If your first tap is up to 120 milliseconds late, it sets the start of your attempt. Later taps are judged relative to that fixed start, so correctly spaced notes still count. A missed first note or a start more than 120 milliseconds late does not shift the rhythm.

What happens when I pass or miss a rhythm?

A score of at least 75% passes the level. A large checkmark appears, then the next rhythm starts automatically. An unsuccessful attempt restarts the same rhythm without an extra result pause. The tap area stays open for one extra beat at the end to catch late final taps. Stop or Escape cancels the automatic flow.

Do I need an instrument or an account?

No instrument, microphone or account is needed. Play on a phone, tablet or computer with sound enabled. Your best stars and settings are saved in this browser, not synced between devices. If Bluetooth headphones add delay, use tap-delay calibration in Settings.
